Wedding Stationery Tips
Avoiding Common Mistakes
It can be costly and time consuming making a mistake on your wedding stationery order. Follow our list and avoid unnecessary headaches!
1. Order Extra Wedding Invitations
Order enough wedding invitations for your guest list, and then add on 5-10 extra.
This will cover you for last minute additions and changes to names.
If you don’t use them, they are a lovely keepsake for your wedding album.
Most stationery providers will have a minimum order of 35 and ordering under that number can be very expensive – if they will do it at all.
Order the extra upfront and avoid the extra costs.
2. Order Extra Envelopes
As careful as you try to be - mistakes can happen when addressing your envelopes.
Ask for additional envelopes to be included in with your order.
3. Order your wedding invitations early
Order your Wedding Invitations 4-6 months in advance (As soon as your details are confirmed.)
Allow ample time for proofing, printing and posting.
Allow time to address your envelopes before you send them out.
Allow guests 3 weeks to return their RSVP's.
4. Check your Postage costs
Some larger invitations will require additional postage, take an invite to the post office and check the rate before you post them all out only to have them not turn up to your guests or get returned to your letter box!
5. Check and double check your spelling
Double check the spelling of your guests names. An error in the spelling of your guests names is not acceptable on a wedding invitation. If you get a name wrong use one of your extra blank invitations and write the name correctly.
Proofread your wedding invitation cards and ask a family member or friend to double check it! It is very easy to miss a simple spelling mistake. Your Stationery Supplier isn’t going to pick up on a venue name or place spelling mistake.
6. If handwriting your guest names, check for smudging
If you are handwriting your guest names onto the invitations, check that the pen you are using wont smudge. Do this to a spare invite – before ruining the whole set!
7. Include an RSVP Date
As your wedding draws nearer you will have your caterers and reception venue chasing you for final numbers and special meal requirements. You will also need time to order your Name Place Cards and Menu Cards.
Your RSVP date should be set 3 weeks prior to your wedding day. Not having an RSVP date will mean unnecessary running around and phone calls to guests chasing confirmation of their attendance.
8. Give Guests Directions
You want your guests to be waiting for you to arrive, not the other way around!
Include as much information for your guests as you can, so that they can find the ceremony and reception places easily. This is particularly important if you are having a destination wedding.
An information card with your invitations will make all the difference to you guests being there on time or consider an online wedding website.
9. Order your wedding menu and name place cards last
Don’t get your place cards printed until you have your RSVPs back. Confirm with your Stationery Supplier the design and colour of your cards, but don’t have the names printed on until your RSVPs are back. That way you avoid paying for cards for people that arent able to make it to your wedding.
Your wedding menu cards should also be printed at the same time, as any menu change can result in a new set of cards being printed
10. Have a Consistent Theme
The theme and "feel" for your day starts as soon as your guests open their wedding invitation. If having a save the date card the theme should be carried through on all stationery pieces. The colours can vary, but the design or theme should remain the same.
